Audible is the leading provider of premium subscription spoken audio on the web. In 1997, Audible was only offering their service on their own custom-built, dedicated mobile audio device. SJMC, Inc. met with Audible executives and helped convince them to port their software technology to upcoming mobile computing devices.

After Audible’s decision to proceed, they hired SJMC, Inc. to develop a finished audio application for the Windows CE-based Palm-size PC. SJMC, Inc. designed the user interface, defined the feature set, and managed the development and testing of the AudiblePlayer for Windows CE and also for the subsequent AudiblePlayer for Pocket PC. The result was the first commercial audio application for any PDA, shipping even before commercial mp3 players were available.

AudiblePlayer was included with nearly every Palm-size PC and has since been bundled with every Pocket PC from Casio, Compaq, and Hewlett-Packard. The AudiblePlayer was featured in the 1999 Microsoft Corporation annual report and has been demonstrated by Bill Gates during his keynote addresses at both Comdex and CES. In October 2001, AudiblePlayer was awarded "Best Pocket PC Audio Application" by Pocket PC Magazine.

Audible continues to have success with its Windows CE product line and survived the .com crash on the strength of their high margin, subscription-based business model. Also, as a result of their commitment to a strong Windows CE product line, Microsoft has twice made equity investments in Audible.

The AudiblePlayer plays back audio programs purchased on www.audible.com.

In May, 2002, CNET rated Audible's service a '9 Out of 10', an 'Editor's Choice', and 'No. 1' in their 'Top 5 Entertainment Applications' category.  In their highly positive review, the editors said, "Audible.com ranks among the Web's best services, with a huge library of discounted audio programs...If you like your reading material in digital format, subscribe ASAP."

"For years, people have been promising that computers are going to change the way we read. But with a few online exceptions…that promise has never been fully realized…but my reading habits have changed lately, thanks to audio books I've been downloading from a service called Audible."

"This is a killer app...I am a convert to audio books and this product sounded fabulous to me: I'd get wider selection, instant availability, and lower prices."
