OmniSky
Corporation wanted to extend their existing Palm OS-based wireless
Internet service to Microsoft's Pocket PCs. SJMC, Inc. assisted them
in founding a relationship with Microsoft and developing a technical
roadmap for the OmniSky Windows CE product line.
OmniSky then turned to SJMC, Inc. to design, develop, and test a complete client solution
for the Pocket PC platform. SJMC, Inc. managed the development and
testing and also helped define the feature set and design the user
interface for the application suite.
The Pocket PC product was released on schedule and on budget to rave
customer and press reviews. Following a successful IPO, OmniSky was
acquired by the leading ISP EarthLink, Inc. on the strength and value
of OmniSky’s client technology. EarthLink has since redeployed the
award-winning OmniSky for Pocket PC service under their brand name
EarthLink Everywhere.
OmniSky for Pocket PC allows users to connect to premium content from
over 1,000 internet content providers including AOL, eBay, E*Trade,
and Yahoo. Users can also search nationwide for names, addresses,
and directions that can then be added with a single tap directly into
Pocket Outlook on the Pocket PC. Also included is OmniSky Mail, a
full featured and optimized email application that collects messages
between 2x and 3x faster than the standard Pocket PC POP3 email client.
These applications seamlessly integrate with Pocket Internet Explorer
and Pocket Inbox and are believed to be the first commercial Pocket
PC applications to use custom ActiveX controls with JavaScript interfaces
within Pocket Internet Explorer.
SJMC, Inc. also managed the development and testing of a series of
OmniSky installers that quickly and easily configure a user's Palm
V, Handspring, or Pocket PC device for wireless Internet access. In
addition to installing numerous OmniSky applications, the installer
detects the user's existing Microsoft Outlook account information
and automatically transfers the information to the wireless device.
OmniSky for Pocket PC was reviewed by eWeek
in April, 2001 as "fast" and "useful" and received
an "A" grade for usability. The reviewer was "particularly
impressed at the speed at which we could retrieve e-mail messages
using the OmniSky service."
"The OmniSky service on the Pocket PC platform is tremendous.
(It) is just going to rock on these devices."
-- Rogers Weed, General Manager, Mobile
Devices Division, Microsoft Corporation
"Our service really shines on the color Pocket PC platform."
-- Patrick McVeigh, CEO, OmniSky Corporation
